Their website is still a trainwreck, but that needn’t dampen news that Enschedé has at last released Renard by Fred Smeijers*, perhaps the first fully realized original text face of the PostScript age. Looks like it’s been tidied up considerably since its first appearance in the scattered but fascinating book Counterpunch† – the lowercase u is no longer backwards – and the improvements are strong and sure. Excellent.

* Pronounced smay-arse.
† Among other things, Smeijers discovered that the steel used by punchcutters 4–500 years ago had a molecular grain, or resolution, almost identical to 2540 increments per inch, the resolution of current filmsetters. Spooky.
