In this interview at wickedfresh.com there is an off-the-cuff if accurate mention that the world-wide web site most admired by the interviewee, Open Letters, is on indefinite hold. Paul Tough’s relentlessly good daily magazine (which made a great many people weep and laugh sitting at their desks at work, and was indirectly responsible for my move to France) may come back in another form someday, however in the meantime there will be an Open Letters-themed shindig this Friday night in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, at Bar 169, under a sign that says “Lawyer”. Only a damned fool would miss it.
Another event of similar appeal takes place at the 92nd St Y the night before, albeit with the searchingly uninspired title Nothing But the Truth... As Told by Canadians. Paul will be hosting a discussion between David Rakoff, Bruce McCall, Jonathan Goldstein and Miriam Toews, during which there will be many explosive bursts of laughter, some polite jabs at Americans, and lots of uncomfortable shifting of chairs in the intervals between audience questions.
