I realize only now that my two top favourite most bestest ever moments in the movies, or at least the two that pop into my head most frequently, are in the same film; that being Say Anything:
One. On their first date, a nervous but pumped Lloyd Dobler has come to pick up Diane Cort. He meets the father, who looks sceptical. Lloyd and Diane climb into his car. As he turns the key, the stereo kicks in at max volume. Instantly he kills the ignition. Pause.
Two. Lloyd is kickboxing with his nephew. In the middle of the patter (‘golittleman! golittleman!’), he lifts the kid up in the air and shouts ‘What do we love?’, and the nephew – what perfect timing – pauses before yelling, ‘Pain!’
