It is gone. Broken to the root and beyond saving, it was extracted. And so to an end comes a long and unfriendly relationship, an end made all the more poignant, surely, by the throbbing, scalding crater of pain that, it turns out, arrives a few hours after a ham-fisted and running-late-for-lunch rural French butche dentist seals the deal.
